PESSAC - LIFE IN THE LABORATORY
For Le Crobusier, the Pessac estate was the first opportunity to design architecture for ordinary people. The commission came from Henry Frugès, a sugar manufacturer near Bordeaux, who wanted to have a housing estate built for his workers. "Pessac must be a laboratory" demanded the ambitious client at the time. A laboratory in which new housing ideas could be tested, an architectural and sociological experiment.
The fifty-one houses built between 1925 and 1929 are still inhabited today. With more or less respect for the famous architect.
