Joost Rekveld

In Joost Rekveld's abstract films, the clarity and logic of construction takes the place of emotional gesture. In his lecture on the poetry of light and his working method, he will explain that his conceptually mature works must also be visually fascinating. The colours and forms in the works of filmmakers like Paul Sharits, Jordan Belson and especially James Whitney inspired him to start making films himself. Like his idols, he creates "ultrachromatic" experiences that are created according to precise scores and follow mathematical principles. Thus all his films are named after prime numbers. Born in 1970, Joost Rekveld enriched his studies in video design with studies in composition of electronic music and philosophy. He realises kinetic installations, designs projections and lighting concepts for theatre and dance productions and also works as a curator.

Technologically, Rekveld evolved with each of his films: most of his early works were made with mechanical and optical machines and the direct action of light and colour filters on the celluloid. He constructed machines without lenses in which the light could be directed through fine slits and apertures.
