DJ-Set by Didi Kern (15 Min)

Moderation: Dietmar Schwärzler

How can a specific sound be translated into a visual (moving) image? This question is central to Tina Frank's long-standing creative practice, which has combined art and design in its various fields of activity from the very beginning. Since the mid-1990s, Frank has been one of the leading protagonists in Austria of a synaesthetic visual language and VJ culture that is strongly associated with the Mego label. Inspired by strategies from the vibrant techno and rave scene, Mego was founded in 1995 with a focus on experimental electronic music: Pita, Fennesz, Hecker and General Magic are just a few of the musicians represented on the label who have collaborated with Tina Frank and contributed sound to her visual work. For the exhibition at the Factory, in addition to a 30-minute film programme, around 28 record covers designed by Tina Frank will be presented as flatware on a wall. These will be accompanied by a small selection of images from enamel and riso prints by Frank, who heads the Visual Communication Department at the Institute for Media at the University of Art and Design Linz. Didi Kern will take on the role of DJ and create a live sound set fed by the music of the LPs presented on the wall. Expect a game of perception with wiggling ears and widening eyes this evening. Be friendly & bring your friends. (ds)
