That is very good

The title of this program could also be "Foreign Homeland", because the individual films take a disturbing look at provincial, petty-bourgeois life in Austria.

It begins with Jakub Vrba's shrill contemplation of the forest, whose protagonist can't get his head around the empty phrases of delight. Ulrich Seidl's second short film - the reason for his expulsion from the Film Academy - finds a captivating documentary form in the depiction of the annual school ball at the Horn grammar school, which is considered an important social event for the small town, but also an event of hope and fear for the young people. Views of the town in the gloomy winter fog form the framework; statements by local politicians, pupils, parents and school staff speak volumes; the actual ball also conveys its atmosphere through Seidl's omissions.

Elefantenhaut, currently sixpackfilm's most successful feature film, introduces the assembly line worker Elfi, who lives with her sick, bumbling mother, whom she can never please. How she, as a "working class heroine", retains her principles, small freedoms and dreams is a must-see. (Brigitta Burger-Utzer)
