Ernie Gehr
Ernie Gehr (born 1943) is one of the most important independent filmmakers in the United States. Since the first screenings of Morning and Wait, he has completed 71 films that stand out for the highest degree of pure cinematic energy and expressiveness. Objective and lyrical at first glance, Gehr's work explores the perceptual as he ponders the world and its ephemeral subjects. He is the recipient of the American Film Institute's Maya Deren Lifetime Achievement Award, and his work is shown and collected ni the world's major museums. (Steve Anker, catalog of the Int. Filmfestspiele Berlin 1993)
Ernie Gehr, master of reduction and extreme economy of the means with maximum condensation of the output: it is essential cinema that he creates and that accounts for his reputation and enormous influence on independent filmmaking. (Peter Tscherkassky, Stadtkino Program No. 218)
