VALIE EXPORT: Film & Video
After initially facing fierce hostility, VALIE EXPORT is considered one of the essential and internationally most influential artists in Austria, combining multimedia art practice and theory with a feminist concern. Her forms of expression range from drawing and conceptual photography to installations, sculptures and performances. The running image plays a central role in her work: film and video. The image and the conditions of its representation in the media have been her subject from the start.
Now, for the first time, a comprehensive retrospective of VALIE EXPORT's films and videos will be shown in Vienna, in the context of cinema - starting with the transnational Expanded Cinema actions and early 8mm films to the radical performances, from the major feature films to her television and documentary projects.
VALIE EXPORT born in Linz, Austria, in 1940, studied at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Linz from 1956-59 and at the Höhere Bundeslehr- und Versuchsanstalt für Textilindustrie, design department, in Vienna from 1960-64. In 1967 she invented her artist name VALIE EXPORT as an artistic concept and logo, with the requirement to write it only in capitals. Her artistic work includes conceptual photography, video, film, laser, installations, body performances, expanded cinema, computer works, Gobelines, sculptures, texts and publications on contemporary art history.
