Ashley Hans Scheirl – Films, Readings, Installations, Talks
The Talking Screen series kicks off with Ashley Hans Scheirl, who, together with Jakob Lena Knebel, will be presenting at the Austrian Pavilion at the Venice Biennale 2022. Scheirl is one of the pioneers in the development of a queer film and art language in this country, which began in the mid-1980s with short, groovy Super 8 punk films. The films, which were always created in collaborative processes - with Ursula Pürrer or Jewels (now Jason Elvis) Barker, among others - are an expression of a DIY cinema bursting with passion that attempts to fill subjectively perceived voids and playfully combines performance art, painting, stage design and music with sexual fetishes and expressive cinematic borrowings.
In addition to the films, in the form of a short reading we look back on an interview that Johanna Schaffer and I conducted with Hans Scheirl (Ashley Hans Scheirl from 2016) 15 years ago and compare it with the present. A multi-media installation on site and a discussion about it complete the programme. (Dietmar Schwärzler)
