The precursors of 8mm film date back to 1900, but it was the further development of the Kodak company ("double 8mm" from 1932, Super 8 from the mid-1960s, Super 8 sound from 1974) that made its resounding success possible, both as an amateur format and as a cost-effective medium for many artists.

In the early work Das Walk by the "Lord of the Frames" Kurt Kren, influences of modern cinema can be felt, which worked on an alternative narrative and formal vocabulary. While Christanell, Pfaffenbichler, Müller, Skot and Ahnelt explore the specific formal-aesthetic parameters of the material in very different genres such as formal and experimental film, performance, music video and documentary film, Schmidt.jr. accompanies an action by Franz West, Padhi Frieberger, Gerd Steinmüller and others in Vienna's city center in Die Tauben.

Super-8 also refers to the space of various subcultures. Pürrer/ Scheirl playfully use sadomasochistic signs of a queer-lesbian formal language. Krems & Furtado, on the other hand, mix vacation film with science fiction to create an eerie post-apocalypse. (Dietmar Schwärzler)
