The Shadow of the Prophet

In their ethnographic documentary The Shadow of the Prophet, Philipp Mayrhofer and Christian Kobald search for traces of the sheikh and Sufi order founder of the Murids Serigne-Touba (1853-1927), who always tried to hide his face.

In Dakar and the former colonial capital of Senegal, Saint Louis, they easily bring together the legends and myths surrounding the rebellious revolutionary. The recreation of historical scenes in the form of graffiti paintings by local artists creates tableaux vivants of archaic beauty, which are characterized by personal knowledge and a deep passion for this icon.
A gathering of pilgrims shows the devotees unleashed and minutes later subdued, while revelations and scholarly reflections remain with individual scholars and philosophers.

One view, one place, one time: Tim Sharp spends an entertaining 7 minutes watching the street below from a hotel window in Gondor, Ethiopia. People walk and stand, but the recurring protagonist is a green plastic bag that stubbornly pushes its way into the picture frame again and again, despite repeated attempts to sweep it away.
