Daïchi Saïto & Karl Lemieux

In recent years, young Canadian experimental filmmaking has attracted increased international attention. The epicentre of this new development is Montréal, where twelve filmmakers joined forces in 2004 to form the Double Negative Collective. The collective's artists are united by the common goal of finding a radically personal film language that uses experimentation with filmic material as a formal means. The role of the filmmaker is understood similarly to that of the alchemist, who also harnesses coincidences, accidents and mistakes as a productive force. The mystery of the transformation of the real world through the cinematic process is celebrated and works full of mysterious, poetic images are the result.

Japanese-born Daïchi Saïto explores the perception of nature and the human body in his cinematic works. In his studies of movement and vision, radical imaging and editing techniques and the lengthy process of developing the celluloid by hand in his own bathtub create an independent - almost physical - film body of fragile poetry.

Karl Lemieux, on the other hand, processes the filmic material with a wide variety of chemicals, colours and razor blades. From Western-heroes to the plant world of the Amazon, the image is broken down into its molecular components and hidden qualities of the original image are made visible. The cinematic landscapes thus created are light-flooded places full of uncanny beauty.
