Motion Picture (La sortie des Ouvrier de l´Usine Lumiére á Lyon)
In a darkroom 50 strips of unexposed 16mm film were mounted on the wall, covering a surface measuring 50 x 80 cm. A single frame was projected onto this raw material, derived from the first film by the brothers Lumière – La Sortie de l’usine Lumière à Lyon (1895).
The exposed strips were subsequently developed and edited together as a new film, which reads the individual Lumière frame like a page from a musical score: from top to bottom and sequentially from left to right. (Peter Tscherkassky)
The result (…) returns the source material to its elemental components, to light and dark – and much like the enlargements in Antonioni’s Blow Up thereby empties it of all figurative meaning. (Gabriele Jutz)
