Double Elvis

I have been fascinated with the fact that film is a succession of single frames since discovering this when I was allowed to operate a 16mm projector at school in the 7th grade. In my second film, GEORGE, made in 1976 on an optical printer, I scrambled the normal order of the frames, having four scenes progress simultaneously through alternating frames. I returned to this technique last year (but within Adobe Premiere) in the production of my silent film THE TREE (shown in last year’s Viennale). I was interested in what result the mattes I generated here  might yield with sync-sound footage. For this experiment I chose the third from the last shot from JAILHOUSE ROCK. The doubling of the image is a reference to the famous Warhol painting DOUBLE ELVIS. (HH)
