_relifted
_relifted has been made in the form of a triptych, though solely portions of the side panels are visible on the edge of the picture and refer to something off camera. shadowy signs, structures and figures bathed in warm skin tones are visible.
in her first video work, tinhoko processes photographs taken during a trip to japan and a video sequence of an elevator ride. in recursive processes, this footage was subjected to innumerable progressive manipulations in a production process lasting months.
the stratification and distortions produced through this digital processing represent an intentional analogy to the workings of the human memory. as in dreams or in memory processes, visual and other levels fuse; they densify and are transformed into mysterious symbols of unique and peculiar beauty.
as a result of the constant reanimation of these personal symbols of memory, the material undergoes a wondrously flowing metamorphosis. this elegant balancing act between recognizability (memory) and - progressive - disintegration (memory of a memory, etc.) involves such an enormous number of details that one would certainly benefit from multiple viewings.
tinhoko created _relifted in consideration of visual and aesthetic aspects exclusively. the electronic soundscore, which made use of samples recorded in the tokyo subway, was recorded live in a final step while the completed video was being played. (norbert pfaffenbichler)
